hiss.....
it was nearing 6pm and GL felt a little stiff of reading for long hours. her mother left for the veggie market after warning GL to stay indoors, for strange things were reportedly happening in their neighbourhood. GL stifled a yawn as she nodded dutifully.
but she needed to clear her head.. a small walk outdoors wouldn't hurt, GL thought. so she walked along the dusty townroads, squinting against the dust laden breeze, and neared the market square….hawkers and people filled the busy street, as they went about their business… GL was glad she'd come out for she felt much better... but she had to get back home before her mother did. as she turned to leave, a one-eyed snake charmer squatting beside the road called out to GL to see his snake perform….. GL shook her head and began to leave. it was then that she noticed the strange glint in the snake charmer’s lone eye... he proceeded to lift the cover off his flat-round basket and GL's gaze followed. in it, lay a beautiful brown snake neatly arranged in concentric circles... it was the strangest shade of brown she had ever seen… the head resting lightly on the coiled body… GL stood there, mesmerized… watching… and then, as if on a cue, the snake looked up and stared back at GL… it had the blackest of black eyes! GL gasped in horror… and noticed what seemed like small beads of swealooked like sweat on the upper lip of the snake… and after what had seemed like forever, GL gathered her wits about her and fled.
back home, she locked the door behind her and willed herself to calm down. she had her exams the next day and needed to study some more. desperately wishing her mother could return soon, GL returned to her books lying on the floor where she had left them… she sat down cross-legged and began poring over them…. after a while, GL had this strange feeling that she wasn’t alone in the house … she squirmed at the thought… but the feeling only kept growing stronger… until she heard him say “what are you reading?”…. GL’s jaw dropped… she instinctively knew who the voice belonged to… it was soft and gentle… and quite needlessly, she spun to her left to see a beautiful brown boy of her age sitting cross-legged beside her… and peering over her shoulder… this time, GL could not flee… she scanned his eyes… they were the blackest of black … she looked at his skin.. it was an unusual brown….. there were beads of sweat over his upper lip… and GL knew what his teeth looked like… fear gave way to indifference as GL feebly answered “EMT”…
GL turned her books and began reading aloud… the brown boy took her hand very gently and raised it to his lips… GL did not resist... her reading turned into mumbling… when her hand was quite close to his lips, the brown boy softly asked “can I bite you?”…. it was a terribly innocent question. GL froze…. more incoherent mumbling followed… GL could not hear her own voice because her heart pounded in her ears… the brown boy was gentle the second time too, as he asked “can I bite you?”… GL’s hand was still in his…. the brown boy hadn’t let go of it… GL swallowed another lump …. unable to mumble anymore, GL continued to look at her books… … and she thought of her exams the next morn… and how hard she had worked for it... and how she had hoped to be an important person some day.. and travel the world... the brown boy’s voice broke her reverie… he was lifting her hand to his lips again and was asking “can I please bite you, GL?”… there was a hint of impatience in his voice now and it looked like he wouldn't wait for an answer... and then, his lips grazed her skin…
woke up screaming… thank God for bedside lamps…
